Uniform Patrol Officer I

The City of Greer is currently accepting applications for a Uniform Patrol Officer I in our Police Department.

Responsibilities include:

  • Responding to various types of calls including house checks, fire calls, alarms, armed robberies, prisoner transports, weapon accidents, traffic control, abandoned vehicles, vehicle violators, school crossings, hazardous materials checks, noise complaints, murders, attempted murders, shoplifting, fraud, missing persons, nuisance calls, deceit incidents, drunks, malicious damage, missing persons, telephone incidents, sexual offenses, burglaries, assaults, death, etc.
  • Patrolling assigned areas which involves driving patrol vehicle, investigating suspicious situations, serving traffic tickets, assisting the public, surveying areas for crimes, and responding to any calls.
  • Handling community policing which involves setting up meetings with businesses, performing security checks, working on crime prevention, and directing the public to organizations such as Department of Social Services, Meals on Wheels, counseling, etc.
  • Identifying, pursuing, and arresting suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts.
  • Providing for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations.
  • Recording facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities.
  • Reviewing facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved.
  • Investigating illegal or suspicious activities.
  • Monitoring, noting, reporting, and investigating suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol area.
  • Testifying in court to present evidence or act as witness in traffic and criminal cases.
  • Relaying complaint and emergency-request information to appropriate agency dispatchers.
  • Monitoring traffic to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and exhibit safe driving procedures.
  • Driving vehicles or patrolling specific areas to detect law violators, issue citations, and make arrests.
  • Executing arrest warrants, locating and taking persons into custody.
  • Patrolling and guarding or assigned areas to provide security, enforce laws, maintain order, and arrest violators for the municipal court.
  • Photographing or drawing diagrams of crime or accident scenes and interviewing principals and eyewitnesses.
  • Evaluating complaint and emergency-request information to determine response requirements.
  • Patrolling specific area on foot, bicycle, or motorized conveyance, responding promptly to calls for assistance.
  • Investigating traffic accidents and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if a crime has been committed.
  • Verifying that the proper legal charges have been made against law offenders.
  • Transporting or escorting prisoners and defendants in route to courtrooms, prisons or jails, attorneys' offices, or medical facilities.
  • Directing traffic flow and rerouting traffic in case of emergencies.
  • Questioning individuals entering secured areas to determine their business, directing and rerouting individuals as necessary.
  • Placing people in protective custody.
  • Serving subpoenas, summonses, jury summonses, and other court orders.
  • Informing citizens of community services and recommending options to facilitate longer-term problem resolution.
  • Providing road information to assist motorists.
  • Conducting community programs for all ages concerning topics such as drugs and violence.
  • Receiving, reviewing, preparing, and/or submitting a variety of reports and records including codes, traffic tickets, accident reports, warrants, surveys, subpoenas, waivers of rights, evidence forms, missing person's reports, juvenile referral forms, timesheets, case file sheets, criminal history requests, court releases, laboratory analyses, various lists and logs, and general office correspondence.
  • Referring to policy and procedure manuals, data, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, statutes, directories, maps, etc.
  • Utilizing various types of equipment and machinery such as patrol car, bicycle, radar, multi-channel radio, copier, telephone, computer, firearms, various police supplies and equipment, and general office supplies.
  • Performing work in DataMaster.
  • Performing related work as required.

Additional duties include:

  • Performing general administrative tasks as required, including preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, filing records, and answering phones.
  • Participating in required training and continuing education to obtain and maintain certifications and stay current on changes in codes and ordinances.
  • Assisting other officers and staff when workload, emergencies, or special assignments require.
  • Staying current on departmental policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Completing work accurately, safely, and efficiently; maintaining assigned equipment in good working condition.
  • Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work area.
  • Identifying and reporting suggested improvements or areas of concern to the Supervisor.
  • Ensuring professionalism and excellent customer service in all interactions while representing the City of Greer.
  • Demonstrating strong ethical conduct, integrity, and accountability with coworkers, customers, and the community.
  • Supporting a culture of results, communication, and professional collaboration within the department and across the organization.
  • Representing the department at community events or meetings when requested by the Supervisor.
  • Adhering to the Employee Handbook and all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining regular, reliable attendance.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Hours: Rotating 12-hour shifts with additional hours as needed

Salary: Uncertified officer salary $50,725; Certified officer salary $53,262

Hiring Process: Initial application, written and physical abilities testing, interview board, initial background investigation, review of personal history questionnaire, polygraph, meeting with the Chief of Police, conditional offer of employment by Human Resources, psychological and medical evaluation, final offer of employment. Selection process may take eight (8) to twelve (12) weeks
