We are currently recruiting qualified applicants for the Forestry Maintenance Worker - Seasonal position. C ome and see why the City of Golden is the place you want to be! As a Forestry Maintenance worker, you will support to all aspects of forestry operations. This includes but is not limited to grounds maintenance, landscape construction, tree planting and trimming, equipment operation, "right of way" maintenance, and parks division support.
This position can be offered as an internship if desired by applicant.
Typical work hours are Tuesday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm.
JOB SUMMARY Tree planting - Plants trees on public lands including parks, trails, cemetery and along public rights-of-way.
Tree Trimming and Maintenance- hand watering, staking, cabling and mulching of younger trees. Trimming for clearance of vegetation impeding vehicles and/or pedestrians, removal of dead or hazardous wood and occasional application of low-toxicity pesticides. Supports tree trimming crew as ground support during aerial operations, will become familiar with job site safety and best practices. Can offer introduction to tree climbing if desired.
Irrigation Maintenance - troubleshoot, maintain, and repair automatic and manual irrigation systems.
Landscape Construction - soil preparation, fine grading, sod/seed installation, shrubs, perennial and flower bed installation, and irrigation system installation, construction of retaining walls.
Right of Way Maintenance - Tree pruning and removals on city right of way and public property.
Parks Division Support - This position may be required to assist with park maintenance operations up to 50% of the time.
Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Work with community service workers and volunteer groups in a crew leader capacity.
QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Seasonal Forestry Technician High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) preferred. Previous experience in outdoor labor and equipment operation preferred. Experience in urban tree care and landscape maintenance highly desired.
Forestry Intern Current enrollment in college or technical school with emphasis in Forestry, Urban Forestry, Parks Management, Natural Resources or closely related field. Experience in landscape maintenance, forestry, horticulture a plus.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Must possess a valid driver's license and good driving record.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Ability to complete time sheets.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to learn basic horticultural skills to include planting and irrigation. Proficient use of general grounds maintenance tools and equipment. Ability to learn to perform semi-skilled park maintenance, construction, and repair work. Ability to learn methods and safety practices in maintenance operations. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. The ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED Janitorial equipment and chemicals, mechanical hand tools, agricultural hand tools, push lawn mowers, string trimmers, edger, chain saws, riding mowers, electrical power tools, walking mowers, sprayers, air compressor/jackhammer, and concrete saws.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to dig; rake; hammer; saw; drill; shovel; push; pull; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. Working conditions is primarily outside in municipal parks and native foothills setting, sometimes in remote locations or cemetery setting. Use of protective equipment as required.
